What do you think about the maid of honor wearing a different dress?

I am getting married and my maid of honor and is my best friend from high school. I saw something in a magazine where the maid of honor wore a dress in the same style and color scheme as the other bridesmaids but with a print instead of a solid color. What do you think of this idea? My color is red and I am having a black and white reception with red accents. For example, the cake will be white with a black design and red roses as a topper. We were thinking of having her dress as a black and white print with maybe a red sash. What do you think?
