Does a memory foam mattress topper need a cover?

My 2.5 inch memory foam mattress topper came with a cover. I like using the topper without the cover because it feels more comfortable and the sheets don't get as wrinkled. Do I need to use the cover that came with the topper or can I just place it under the sheets?
